Loyalty
Cafe loyalty program ideas that regulars actually use
The best cafe loyalty program is the one a barista can explain while the milk is steaming. These ideas stay simple on purpose. Complicated points maths looks clever in a slide and fails at 8:10.
Start with a stamp card people can count
Buy nine, get the tenth free is still the clearest offer in coffee. A digital stamp card does the counting for you and shows the balance on the receipt and in the app. If you need a promotion, change the earn rate for a week rather than inventing a second currency.
Put the free item in the rules. A free drink of the same size is easier to honour than “any item”, which turns into a debate when someone wants the most expensive bottle on the shelf.
Reward the visit you want more of
Double stamps before 9am fills a shoulder, not the peak. A free pastry on the fifth savoury lunch pushes the bakery case when drinks are already selling. Pick one behaviour. If every hour of the day has a bonus, none of them feel special.
- Morning double stamps before the rush
- A monthly free pastry for a middle tier
- Member prices only after a visit threshold, so the discount is earned
- A birthday drink sent the morning of, not a week later
Use tiers only when the middle tier is obvious
Three names are enough: something like Regular, Local and Family. Each step needs one perk a customer notices, such as a monthly pastry or early access to a seasonal drink. Secret multipliers do not create loyalty. They create questions at the till.
Win people back while they still remember you
A regular who has not visited in about three weeks is a better message than a blast to everyone. Offer something small and dated, mention the drink they usually order if you know it, and stop if they do not engage. Pair the offer with WhatsApp, and use SMS when WhatsApp is not there.
What to avoid
Do not run paper cards and a digital program side by side for long. Staff will stamp the wrong one. Do not require an app download before the first reward. A phone number is enough to start. Do not discount so hard that your best customers become your lowest margin. Member pricing only works if recipe costing says the cup still makes sense.
